GCU to Close on Juneteenth
Guadalupe Credit Union will be closing branches this year in honor and celebration of Juneteenth, on Monday, June 20th. In continuing our journey into diversity, equity and inclusion, we determined that closing for the day was the right thing to do.
On Juneteenth, we commemorate the anniversary of the emancipation of the enslaved African Americans back in 1865. Back on January 1st, 1863, then President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation outlawing slavery in the original confederate states. On June 19th, 1865, Union Army general Gordon Granger under the General Order No. 3 enforced the freedom of enslaved people in the last held out state in the confederacy, Texas. President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law on June 17, 2021.
