The holidays are coming!

Tips for spreading some cheer without draining your wallet.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, but for many of us, it’s also the most expensive. And unless you’ve been saving throughout the year for it, that can add up to major stress instead of quality time with family and friends. Here are some tips to make this holiday season cheerful, yet budget-friendly.

1. Set an overall budget.

Often we make a list first, and a budget later. Try starting with the total dollar amount you can comfortably handle—don’t forget Thanksgiving! (If you’re not sure what this number should be, ask yourself what you can afford without relying on credit cards.) Then take a look at the people on your gift list and divide up your budget accordingly.

2. Stick to your budget.

It’s inevitable that you’ll be tempted to spend more than you planned. You might start worrying that they’re spending more on you than you are on them, or you might run across a more expensive gift that you’re sure they’d love. But before you pull out the plastic, remember that your loved ones would probably rather have a healthier, happier you than a fancier trinket that comes with a bunch of debt-induced stress. After all, wouldn’t you want the same for them?

3. Go for the personal touch.

If you haven't tried making your own gifts before, it could be not only a way to save money, but also a great opportunity for some family bonding time.

There are thousands of budget-friendly, personalized ideas out there. A quick internet search for “homemade gift ideas” is sure to turn up something that will inspire you. And two things are guaranteed: 1) the care you put into it will always be remembered, and 2) no one will give the same present as you!

Even if you’re not Martha Stewart, it’s a good thing.

4. Get a little help from your friends.

Bring your gift list and come see us! We can help, whether that means sitting down with you to work out a budget or setting you up with a small personal loan, line of credit, or VISA® Credit Card to help you shop. We will work with you in determining a payment that will still let you breathe easy.

5. Get ready for next year.

Open a Christmas Club account, kick back and relax knowing that when the holidays roll around again next year, you’ll be set! Simply tell us how much you want to save and every month we’ll automatically set aside the cash for you in a special club account. Then come November 1st, you’ll have reserves available to spend worry-free! Learn more about our Christmas Club account here
