Check your credit online
Keeping tabs on your own credit report is not only an important first step toward building healthy credit, it also gives you the chance to catch costly errors. Identity theft, fraud or reporting mistakes could be hurting your score without your knowing it!
Fortunately, there are two handy online tools that let you monitor your credit history and your score for free:
1. AnnualCreditReport.com - Start here for detailed information on each account in your file and how it affects your credit. You have a legal right to get one free credit report per year from each of the 3 major bureaus. This is the only official site to request those reports.
You can choose request all 3 reports at once and compare them, or space them out through the year.
2. CreditKarma.com - this is the only site we’ve found that will give you your credit score (from TransUnion) for free without requiring a credit card. Be on guard, however--it is loaded with advertising.
Important Notes:
· Checking your own report will not lower your credit score.
· Be cautious! There are many websites out there advertising "free credit reports" that turn out to be trying to sell you something--or worse.
Always verify that any website asking for personal information is what it says it and that it is secure:
1. Look for https:// (the extra “s” stands for “secure”) at the beginning of the web address
2. Look for a padlock icon in your browser’s location or status bar and click on it to bring up the site’s security information.
